...scientists found evidence of two distant planets that seemed to have water. We jumped on the Mars story last week, scheduling pieces by former science editor Leon Jaroff, new writer Jeffrey Kluger (who co-wrote the book that became the basis for Apollo 13), correspondent J. ...wrote poetry as well, though his former friends are contemptuous of his efforts. One poem from 1971, apparently an attempt to capture the feelings of Yugoslav peasants, was called, "Let's Go Down to the Town and Kill Some Scum." Says writer and essayist Marko Vesovic, 51, a fellow Montenegrin who has known Karadzic since 1963: "His poems didn't have character. He imitated the style of whoever impressed him." The right-wing pamphleteer apparently did write speeches for Senator Joe McCarthy, as he claimed, but the speeches may never have been used. The jaunty, confident head of the family most...

What are we to make of Gore Vidal? He has earned a respectable reputation as an essayist and novelist, but now he's irrationally determined to pass himself off as a screenwriter, particularly of the script for Ben-Hur. This past year his obsession has grown like crabgrass. Your story on homosexuals in film and the documentary The Celluloid Closet [CINEMA, March 11] said that in Ben-Hur, "writer Vidal got actor Stephen Boyd to suggest, sub rosa, a homoerotic tryst with Heston." That demands a response for the record. Vidal was in fact imported for a trial...
