Mr. James Gordon Bennett, proprietor of the New York Herald offered the University the sum of $1000 to establish a prize for "the best essay in English prose upon some subject of American governmental, domestic or foreign policy of contemporaneous interest." Following the example of Oxford University, the American Society for the Extension of University Teaching has decided to establish a University Extension summer meeting where all the students now enrolled in that movement throughout the country, estimated at 50,000, can continue their studies. The place selected for the meeting is Philadelphia, the University of Pennsylvania having offered to place all its building and athletic grounds and boating privileges at the disposal of those who attend the meeting, which will be in effect a great summer university.
