Democrats are beginning to echo that idea in private. While McCain calls for an "economic surge," Obama still struggles when trying to establish a strong emotional connection with voters facing tough economic times. That's a worry, they say, as voters' attention has shifted away from the war in Iraq to gas prices and job losses. And Obama at times has seemed to play into McCain's new script. Reporters have not forgotten that someone inside his campaign authorized--or wasn't smart enough to stop--Obama's appearance at a podium with an altered version of the presidential seal...
Trying to establish those who opposed Dwight Eisenhower's, John F. Kennedy's, Richard Nixon's and Ronald Reagan's negotiations with the enemy as the same people - the anti-engagers - is ludicrous. Everything a President does is opposed by someone for some reason. The larger point is that we must negotiate through strength, a fact Obama seems not to understand. Neither did Jimmy Carter. Obama's willingness to withdraw from Iraq while on the brink of victory and to talk without condition to the perpetrators of much of the violence is foolhardy and dangerous. ...Bums "R" Us Like Nancy Gibbs, I eagerly await the arrival of "some new bums" in the political arena [July 28]. Only by leveling the field will those players...

...potholes of his own to fill. Michiganders didn't take kindly to being made the villain in Obama's oft told tale of how he had the courage to go to Detroit and say the auto industry needed to raise fuel-efficiency standards. It was an obvious way to establish his reputation as a "different kind of politician." But it didn't help his relative weakness among blue collar voters. Now Obama has to run up a healthy margin among Oakland's affluent independents and Republicans, who have been crossing over to vote Democratic in recent elections. David Woodward...
