...sense, a socialist lecturing to atheists on political economy is every bit as much preaching to them about the salvation of their souls--propter nos homines et propter nostram salutem--as a priest addressing the faithful about the Incarnation, Crucifixion, and Resurrection. The aim is not heaven, however, but utopia--and a false utopia will no more do than a tinsel paradise would have sufficed for the martyrs and the saints. Vatican Radio last week confirmed what Protestants have suspected ever since Catholic observers held "informal" discussions with Eastern Orthodox delegates at the World Council of Churches meeting in Rhodes last month (TIME, Aug. 31 et seq.). There will be an unofficial conference in Venice next year between Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox theologians to discuss points of agreement and disagreement between the two churches. And, as many Western observers had already suspected, the highly touted backyard steel furnaces proved a fiasco. None of 3,000,000 tons produced was usable in industry, confessed Peking. Between the lines could be read the bitter admission that the commune system had resulted only in pushing China's luckless peasants...

...laymen, the late Ernest Jones (1879-1958) is best known as the author whose massive The Life and Work of Sigmund Freud (TIME, Oct. 19, 1953 et seq.) gave the world its best glimpse so far at what went on behind the brooding brow of the father of psychoanalysis. But Welsh-born Ernest Jones was also the No. 1 psychoanalyst of the English-speaking world. In Free Associations (Basic Books; $5), his unfinished autobiography published last week, Jones offers the world a posthumous look into his own lively mind...
