Most alarming of all is the implication in the Pi Eta newsletter that "get[ting] laid" is one of the benefits of paying membership, dues. How respected will a female guest's "no" be in light of this guarantee? Many of the women, especially those from other schools, were not aware that they were to be considered open game at the Pi party. Far beyond issues of free speech, the newsletter presents a real safety issue for women where such a party is represented in a very different fashion to club members and their invited female guests. (Women at other...

...believe that on a national level we need to seriously consider the issue of pornography as a direct threat to women's safety, freedom of movement and freedom of speech. Within the Harvard community, we must also recognize the threat to women presented by the Pi Eta's depiction of women as sub-human prey for sexual violence. If Harvard can shut the Pi Eta down because of the club's initiation rites, it can certainly do so on the basis of this (especially given that it is already on probation). Harvard has demonstrated its muscle in cases of student...

...light of the recent press which the Pi Eta Speakers Club and its newsletter have caused during the last week, we find that the degree of response has been heartening because one sees that there are people out there who are concerned about the sexism that exists at Harvard. However, the attitude of those who seek to formally censure and, in an extreme way, close down the Pi Eta Club is, at best, idealistic, in that it is based on the assumption that to eliminate the Pi means to eliminate the sexism from our community. What such actions will...

...this time between a group of "rabid feminists" and a "bunch of incurable male chauvinists." This pigeon-holing of such an important issue is what we should all strive to prevent. Now that the party is over and the picket line has dispersed, we fear that the Pi Eta will become just another isolated incident. But we cannot, and should not, rest easy, secure in the belief that an injustice has been exposed and the problem solved. We are all still guilty of more subtle manifestations of sexist views, which regard women as objects to be valued and given meaning...

This letter is intended for all the clear-minded, rational and objective Harvard-Radcliffe undergraduates. Therefore, those of you who belong to the Radcliffe Union of Students, the Undergraduate Council or the Crimson need not read any further. The recent attack against the Pi Eta has been the most unwarranted vigilante crusade that I have ever experienced in my life. NONE of the people who are attacking the Pi Eta have any firsthand knowledge of the club whatsoever. They are simply jumping on one of the many bandwagons that exist here at Harvard. Had they made any effort to find...
