Commander Byrd was in charge of the Naval detachment of the Expedition which was to have flown to the North Pole from Etan, one of the farthest North bases of MacMillan. He planned to take three Loening Amphibian planes as far North as was possible in the Expedition's steam vessel, to unpack them at Etah, and then to fly North to Cape Columbia or Cape Thomas Hubbard where a flying base could be established.
