...long can Luang Prabang's slumber last? There are ominous signs of a rude awakening. In the old quarter's main street, Sisavangvong Road, tourists now outnumber locals. Satellite dishes bristle from roofs and backyards, sucking from the ether a steady stream of inane Thai game shows. Internet shops spring up daily, each filled with earnest backpackers clicking away. Highway 13 from Vientiane is now paved, putting the capital just a day's drive away...

...every day, palm trees sway on the boulevards--and the groundwater is poisoned. All over town, ugly drilling rigs mounted on trucks are boring 300-foot holes to trace the plumes of a pollutant that has leaked from the underground tanks of gasoline stations. The culprit: methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), an additive that makes gasoline burn cleaner but one the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has classified as a potential carcinogen. ...filled with more black holes and neutron stars than experts believe. If so, we could know within a decade whether his theory is supported by astronomical observations--and whether the ideas of time we've clung to for most of human history will go the way of the ether and the flat earth...

...ethereal vulnerability of Yorke’s voice is at its best here in a way that has been absent from the new albums. The conspicuous failure on the album is “Everything In Its Right Place”: The song that heralded Radiohead’s shift from guitars into the keyboard realm as the eerie first song on Kid A sounded like a band gradually materializing out of the ether on a barren landscape. On Wrong, it sounds like a flat and somewhat aimless keyboard sample underlaying Yorke’s vocals. When deprived...
