...feature for France this year. Turkey once exported guest workers to Switzerland and Germany, and is now seeing a return. Several of its team, including Hamit Altintop and Hakan Balta, are German-born. Germany itself reflects Europe's now swirling populace. Two strikers, Miroslav Klose and Lukas Poldowski, are ethnic Poles, and striker Kevin Kuranyi was born in Brazil. An intriguing newcomer, Stuttgart striker Mario Gomez, is a Spanish-German blend whose subtle southern touch made him the Bundesliga's second-best striker behind Bayern Munich and Luca Toni of Italy...
...south, Kenya leapt from relative tranquility into the media spotlight in January, after contested elections roiled longstanding ethnic tensions, and whispers of civil war were heard. There, American leadership—perhaps itself chastened, perhaps merely overstretched—rightfully resisted the urge to evangelize with troop deployments, sending Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to assist with talks. ...Survey (NHANES), which has been ongoing since the 1960s - calculating childhood overweight rates is an inexact science. NHANES tracks kids' body mass index (BMI), a ratio of height to weight commonly used to approximate whether a child should be classified as overweight. But BMI is far from perfect - different ethnic groups tend to carry weight differently, and the ill effects of excess body weight can arise at different BMI levels. The statistic doesn't measure, for example, how much fat a child is carrying around the middle, which seems to be the best indicator for the negative health risks...
