...sharp rhetoric has, perhaps predictably, polarized the campaign in this Andean nation of 27 million along class, ethnic and geographic lines, setting up an ideological battle that no one expected when he first burst on the scene in November. In the latest polls, his support is running around 30%, while his nearest competitors, onetime Congress member Lourdes Flores and former president Alan Garcia, are both at about 25%. If no candidate gets more than 50% there will be runoff between the two top finishers...
...sincere advocates of Protestantism, but it would hardly be fair to associate all Americans with the terrible things that some people have done in the name of their Christian beliefs—remember that Christianity has been used to justify slavery, lynchings, Crusades and many other bloody wars, Balkan ethnic cleansing, etc. There are apparently people in Saudi Arabia and its government who support terrorism, just as there are apparently people in America and in our government who support the use of torture and other measures formerly designated as war crimes, at least when they are used...

Indeed, Harvard extracurriculars are proof that students are willing to leap across boundaries...
...aftermath of Ariel Sharon's massive stroke and sudden exit from politics, the rise of this gruff right-winger has become the most intriguing aspect of an otherwise lackluster electoral campaign. His plan is controversial not only for some Israelis who see it as akin to ethnic cleansing, but also, not surprisingly, among the Arabs. However much Israeli Arabs complain about being treated as second-class citizens, most of them say they prefer living in Israel to being submerged inside the West Bank?s poverty and turmoil...
