...Survey (NHANES), which has been ongoing since the 1960s - calculating childhood overweight rates is an inexact science. NHANES tracks kids' body mass index (BMI), a ratio of height to weight commonly used to approximate whether a child should be classified as overweight. But BMI is far from perfect - different ethnic groups tend to carry weight differently, and the ill effects of excess body weight can arise at different BMI levels. The statistic doesn't measure, for example, how much fat a child is carrying around the middle, which seems to be the best indicator for the negative health risks...
