...hemorrhage was golden. Because the Chamber has voted down Cabinet after Cabinet rather than balance the budget (TIME. Oct. 30, et ante), gold was pouring out of France at the rate of 100,000,000 francs a day, in flight to London, Amsterdam, Geneva and even Berlin. The Deputies pointed to the Bank of France gold reserves of nearly 80 billion francs and contended that the drain of 100 million francs a day could continue for at least another month before becoming "dangerous." This would give time, they remarked, to construct more Cabinets and "find a real majority...
...Communists as the symbol of and signal for a nation-wide Communist revolt. Not the slightest proof of this ever materialized, the Nazis themselves assuming all power instead and using the Reichstag fire as an excuse for Chancellor Hitler's repressive acts (TIME, March 13 et seq.). Last week amid Firebug van der Lubbe's passionate protest, Judge Bunger suspended the trial for half an hour and the Dutchman was led below. When brought back into court he again seemed stupefied as in the past but suddenly began to writhe and gasp as though struggling to throw...
...Dnieprostroy" Dam, but he singled out as "probably the oldest friend of the Soviet Union in America" none other than that dramatic victim of amnesia, Col. Raymond Robins who wandered off among the mountains of North Carolina while en route to visit President Hoover (TIME, Sept. 19, 1932, et seq.). In Russia, where the Colonel headed a U. S. Berlin's vast Sportpalast rumbled one night last week with a great gathering of the "German Christians," Nazi Wing of the Evangelical Church (TIME. June 12, et seq.). on deck to demand the super-Nazification of the Church. Their presiding officer was brisk, sleek, pomaded young Rev. Joachim Hossenfelder. Bishop of Berlin and Brandenburg. Their prime hot-head was one Dr. Reinhold Krause. Meeting a few days after the 450th birthday of their Church's founder, Martin Luther, they proceeded to juggle ecclesiastical dynamite. According to Nazi Pastor Krause, German Protestantism needed a "second Reformation." He submitted three...
With the loss of Dean, Wells, Kopans and many others of their calibre, including the entire center squad, Coach Casey faces a trying task next fall. In spite of all the losses the backfield will be perhaps the least hard hit by graduation. Locke, Litman, Lane, Haley et al, will be back in full force next year. But the line situation is much more troubling. Three first string tackles, Kopans, Francisco and Rogers will be gone. To fill their places Casey has Burton and those coming up from the Freshman eleven. Even the brilliant Jayvee tackles, who looked good enough...
