...orchestra's strings have bloomed into full brilliancy. Though staunchly rooted in the classics, the Israeli audiences received his reading of Bartok's First Piano Concerto, with Israeli Pianist Daniel Barenboim, as enthusiastically as they do their Brahms. Mehta was equally successful with Ravel's Daphnis et Chloé Suites, a piece that, until a few years ago, the orchestra could barely manage, owing to a marked deficiency in the brass and woodwinds sections. The short-windedness has since been cured by luring foreign talent-for example, Trombonist Ray Parnes from the Pittsburgh Symphony-with guarantees...
...fulfill this commitment. If Mr. Wilson and others like him would spend less time endeavoring to support their selfish motives, and more time reflecting on their obligations to the country that provided their education, perhaps the enemy would be less encouraged in their continuing aggression. ...turned out, Sophia's yes was one of the few worthwhile affirmations at the festival. Vanessa Redgrave was voted best actress for her performance in Morgan! (see following story). New Wave Director Claude Lelouch, 28, shot the picture in four weeks, at one point had himself strapped with his camera to the hood of a speeding car to get realistic footage of the races. The crusty critics even applauded during the showing, rated the film as an homme-dinger, a top contender for the festival's first prize, the Golden Palm...
...heart surgery performed by Dr. DeBakey et al. [April 29] was interesting and exciting. However, I believe that the play-by-play news releases went beyond the limits of medical ethics by violating the physician's obligation to keep his patient's problems and therapy to himself. Such experimental medical procedures, though a necessary part of medical advancement, should not be displayed to the public like a baseball game; the dignity of the patient and his family is too important to permit that...
