...Maine to Medicine Hat were silent and windswept, their fairways and greens deserted. One that was not lay in a small coastal canyon about a mile from the Pacific Ocean. Golf balls by the dozens whizzed down Riviera's lush fairways; crowds of gawkers hustled along among the eucalyptus trees; caddies were busy as bird dogs. The $15,000 Los Angeles Open, which puts golf's winter circuit in high gear, opens there this week...
...ordinary evening at the Arab-owned, Jewish-operated Café Hawaii on the outskirts of Tel Aviv. Jewish couples crowded the dance floor. Alongside, the River Yarkon flowed quietly between its eucalyptus-lined banks. "Jeep," a comedian, stepped to the microphone, opened his mouth to sing, and a grenade exploded among the dancers. From darkness surrounding the brightly lighted open-air café came the flash and rattle of automatic rifle fire. Four Jews were killed, twelve wounded. Survivors said the attackers were Arabs. If so, the raid was the first serious attack by Arabs on Jews since...
...seaside, town of Natanya for their revenge. There, a voice informed Tel Aviv newspapers by telephone, Sergeants Mervyn Paice and Clifford Martin could be found. And there, in a clearing heavy with the stench of death, the searchers found them. Their bloodied, blackened bodies swung to & fro from eucalyptus trees. Their shirts were wrapped around their heads. Through their clothes and flesh were pinned Irgun "communiqués" accusing the sergeants of "anti-Jewish crimes." They had died slowly, by clumsy strangulation...

British troops grew sullen, angry, dangerous. That night, in Tel Aviv, British soldiers on foot and in armored cars lashed out in an unsoldierly demonstration. They smashed windows, beat Jews, fired Sten guns into a crowded bus. Five Jews were killed, 15 wounded. Next day, at the funeral for the five dead, mourners and police clashed again. The toll: 33 Jews injured. Said one resident of Natanya: "This cancels...
...Verruga is still something of a medical mystery. Nobody has ever found out how the sandfly acquires its parasite, where it lays its eggs, why it seems to have thrived only in one narrow area. Doctors have found no effective treatment for verruga. Natives burn animal dung and pungent eucalyptus leaves in their huts to keep out the sandfly. They also dose themselves with red wine and water in which corn silk has been boiled. Neither measure does much good. The natives appear to survive mainly because those who live through a mild form of verruga in childhood develop immunity...
