...Latest Step. Last week a joint theology commission released a paper reporting a "substantial agreement on the doctrine of the Eucharist," which, they added portentously, was "the most important statement for Anglicans and Roman Catholics since the Reformation." The international commission, which grew out of the 1966 meeting of Pope Paul VI and the Archbishop of Canterbury, worked for two years on the new 1,500-word document, which they completed last September. The Pope and the Archbishop have only now agreed to release the statement, but simply as a basis for further study-not as church teaching. Nonetheless...
...churchgoers enthusiastic about ecumenism, all this is good news. But the general agreement on the nature of the Eucharist raises the question of who has the power to bring about the radical change that occurs in the bread and wine. Thus the next logical matter for the international commission of scholars to consider is the validity of Anglican priestly orders, which Rome has never conceded. A step toward some form of Catholic recognition of the orders of other churches has already been taken in theological talks between Catholics and Lutherans in the U.S., based on their earlier agreement...
...using the sanctuary for weekday performances of the off-Broadway American Place Theater. The American Place troupe now has new quarters, but Monick, Lanier's successor, has continued St. Clement's involvement with the theater. In a 1969 experiment, Monick and Playwright Tom LaBar prepared an environmental Eucharist, a daylong service in which parishioners were taken one by one through rooms depicting each episode of the Mass...
...that sounds like "a group of businessmen defending an international monopoly." In matters of belief, the Bologna professor asserted, the Lex reflects no "hierarchy of truth," placing all church teachings on the same level and demanding acceptance of them all without distinction. Theologically, he complained, the doctrine of the Eucharist, that of Jesus Christ's real presence in the bread and wine of Communion, is slighted. For Vatican II, the doctrine was the focal point of the church's existence...
...which people in the Harvard community have been upset with Chris Durang's The Greatest Musical Ever Sung, and I write at this late date [Dec. 14] only because hostile letters have appeared so recently in the CRIMSON. As an Episcopal clergyman who does indeed "still take his eucharist seriously," I can only say that I found Durang's musical a sheer delight and not in the least offensive. To compare it, as one letter did (CRIMSON, 11/30), to "a musical satire of the life and death of Malcolm X or a rollicking revue of the atrocities at Auschwitz...
