...There is no danger of America's becoming involved in the Balkan troubles as Turkey in Europe is now so small as to occasion no disputes. All the European nations, the Great Powers included, are in favor of an American mandate and would take it themselves were they not already exhausted. Bulgaria, who in the past has been Turkey's strongest enemy, is particularly friendly to the United States as is evidenced by her refusal to declare war on us at the time of our entry, despite Germany's continued protests that she should...
...unusual clearness of detail and the richness of their modelling make this survey an attractive book for the general public interested in early painting, as well as an indispensable one for students and collectors. The painstaking notes on certain incomplete art treasures of which parts are housed in various European collections will make the book particularly valuable for foreign museums, and furnish a convenient summary of the chief works of interest of the period. Moreover, the imprisonment of the United States consular agent, Jenkins, raises a nice question of international...

While a student at the American School in Athens he took an active part in the excavations at the Argive Heraeum. He taught classical art and archaeology at Wellesley and Bryn Mawr, as well as serving as professor in the American School at Athens. With the late Richard Norton '92 he was engaged in the American excavations at Cyrene in North Africa. Professor Hoppin's "Handbook of Attic Red-Figured Vases," recently published...
