Bebb? A sleazy evangelist, the Lord's pitchman, the proprietor of an ordination-by-mail diploma mill. Parr sends Bebb the suggested love offering and becomes an ordained preacher by return post. Bebb himself appears shortly thereafter: fierce and shrewd and seedy, awash in the blood of the lamb-and in plans for beggaring the Internal Revenue Service. He is there, he says, to save Parr's soul and teach him gainful godliness...
...soloists in the Passion were, for the most part, top flight. Karl Dan Sorensen, as the Evangelist, had a remarkable tenor voice of incomparable beauty, given a slight tendency to thin out in the upper register. Francis Hester as Jesus was beyond praise, giving a flawless performance of a beautiful part. Nancy Wilson, a sophomore called in at the last minute to fill in for the ailing soprano, did a splendid job, handling most of her role as if she knew it by heart. The choruses were in wonderful shape, as was the first orchestra which handled itself remarkably well...
...meeting of the council's General Assembly. Instead, after sharing first prize with Vladimir Ashkenazy in Moscow's 1962 Tchaikovsky Competition, he became an evangelist for music that few other major pianists would touch. One of his best LP albums is devoted entirely to some of the piano music of Carl Nielsen (RCA), another to Ferruccio Busoni's hour-long piano concerto (Angel), a woolly and wonderful specimen of Germanic post-romanticism that includes a resounding men's chorus in the finale...
...long since divorced from Mc-Pherson, Aimee eloped to Yuma, Ariz., with a plump baritone named David Hutton, who sang in the temple choir. On the morning after their wedding, Aimee and David cooed over the radio from the bridal boudoir in the evangelist's home and signed off with a loud wet smack. Next day David was sued for breach of promise by a "masseuse" named Myrtle Joan Hazel St. Pierre, who announced that "Big Boy" had sullied her virtue on the floor of her living room and then had failed to make an honest woman...
