Everybody knows that Billy Graham is a great showman who can fill arenas in most cities of the world, but few realize that the evangelist is also something of a movie mogul. His Burbank studio, World Wide Pictures, has turned out 101 films over the past 25 years, many of them pedestrian one-reelers, some of higher quality. Graham's latest, The Hiding Place, which is being previewed in eleven cities this spring, is a totally new departure. A 145-minute color spectacular with two award-whining stars, Julie Harris and Eileen Heckart, it boasts 2,000 extras...
...children (one in wedlock, one out), a phantom fetus and a miscarriage. In real life, she is the daughter of a Methodist minister and is married to Record Producer Dan Fortunato. She commutes into Manhattan from staid suburban Westchester County. "I'd love to play a real evangelist like Aimee Semple McPherson," says Fulton of her Hollywood aspirations. In case that script doesn't work out, however, Fulton has continued fulfilling her soap-opera duties each day before heading for the Plaza...
Died. Norman Treigle, 47, New York City Opera's deeply resonant bass since 1953; of gastrointestinal bleeding; in New Orleans. A devout Baptist, Treigle once sang gospel songs with a touring evangelist known as "the Chaplain of Bourbon Street"; his first lead role at City Opera, a guilt-haunted, Bible-pounding minister in Carlisle Floyd's Susannah, was based on those early experiences. Treigle's gaunt face and spidery figure virtually typecast him for such roles as Mephistopheles in Boito's and Gounod's versions of the Faust legend, and as the four villains...
Gargantuan Exercise. Even the World Council of Churches is "a gargantuan exercise in such cultural capitulation," said the Rev. Richard Neuhaus, an antiwar activist and pastor of St. John the Evangelist Church in Brooklyn. Neuhaus and Fellow Lutheran Peter Berger, iconoclastic author and sociologist at Rutgers, were the originators of the protest. Exasperated by what they consider a church sellout to such man-made ideologies as scientific rationalism and socialism, they wrote the original draft of the statement a year ago, mailed it to 50 churchmen for their reactions and summoned the Hartford meeting to prepare the final declaration...
...careful attention to conserving some essence of fact. One telling example, in his widely used Anchor Bible commentary on John, is his treatment of the account of Jesus' raising of Lazarus. The miracle is a vivid incident, placed at the very end of Christ's ministry by the evangelist and cited as the reason for Jesus' arrest and execution...
