...Today we have the summer's last major comedy: Superbad, produced by Apatow and co-written by Rogen. It's about a pudgy, mouthy slob named Seth (Jonah Hill) and his quieter, slightly more kempt buddy Evan (Michael Cera) who want, with variously intense degrees of desperation, to get laid before they graduate from high school. At the end of a night of wacky hijinks, the lads do wind up in a sleeping bag, exchanging intimacies with...each other...
Superbad is the purest iteration of the so-called bromance form yet. Two best friends, Seth and Evan, on the verge of graduating from high school, have to get booze, get over the fact that they're about to go their separate ways and get girls before the night is out. It sounds sweet, but it opens with Seth discussing with Evan which porn website they should subscribe to for the summer. (Top contender: Vagtastic.com. He also notes how jealous he is that the infant Evan got to nurse on Evan's mom's breasts. And it gets more vulgar...
...jokes hardly register on the shock-ometer these days; Evan Almighty, with its hundreds of comic crap-takings, has been marketed to Christian groups. The scatological jolt of Aachi & Ssipak fades pretty quickly, as viewers' jaws drop, along with their resistance, at the movie's brain-bursting visual density. A million film references - Basic Instinct, Aliens, half of the Spielberg oeuvre and probably lots of Asian movies I don't know - collide and spawn a zillion more. Director Jo wants his picture to be hip to cultural references high and low (Diaper King...
...tale of two other movies. Apatow's 2005 comedy The 40 Year Old Virgin made a star of Steve Carell, who was then signed to be the lead in Evan Almighty. It's a sequel to the Jim Carrey hit Bruce Almighty, in which an ordinary guy is given supernatural powers by God himself. This time, Congress-man Evan (Carell) is told to build an ark in preparation for a coming flood. A premise for surefire laughs, unless you happen to live in New Orleans. But God didn't foot the bill for the movie's cost overruns; Universal...
...Shrek the Third stoking the audience's addiction to familiar stories writ large. But those films came out in May. Then what? "The summer began under a cloud of tentpoles," says Marc Shmuger, chairman of Universal Pictures, which has bet heavily on comedies, including Knocked Up and Evan Almighty. "We felt there would be demand for an entertaining alternative. And the success of Knocked Up shows how large the thirst for a great, funny movie really is. I think by September we will be saying it was the summer of comedy...
