...about the walk-on who makes the team, the aging jock who summons the idealistic spirit of boyhood and wins our hearts. To the degree that Invincible evokes that old-time religion, to the degree that its hero's rewards are limited, it seems to me that, on the eve of a new football season, it is a modestly useful reminder of what this game - all our games - have lost. Just don't let it go to your head, rummaging through the attic in search of your old football shoes. They probably won't fit anymore. And if they...

...approach to self-defense. And there is no more clarity than there was last week as to how the Lebanese Army will effect the nearly impossible task of verifiably disarming Hizballah-nor any new guarantees of Israeli restraint if they spy evidence that they aren't. But on the eve of a meeting of European Union foreign ministers in Brussels, it was clearly no longer tenable for France, a key architect of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, to be seen as fearing to tread where others were ready to - particularly the Italians, 3,000 of whom have been promised...

...city, rounding up illegal dishes, but unlike in the past, without issuing fines. Whether these measures are a temporary flare-up or here to stay remains to be seen. So far, the government seems undaunted by the marked lack of public enthusiasm for its Islamic causes. On the eve of the ceasefire in Lebanon and Israel, the establishment celebrated Hizballah's success as though it were an Iranian military victory. ...true that on the eve of the G-8 Summit, Putin's government had to show that it had cleaned up St. Petersburg; the police shot dead a 22-year-old skinhead, named as a neo-Nazi leader, charged with a blatant murder of an African student and resisting arrest. But despite that show of force, hate assaults did not cease either in St. Petersburg or elsewhere. A week after the G-8 summit, the jury at the St. Petersburg City Court acquitted four nationalists charged with the deadly assault of an African student. The gallery applauded and shouted "well...

People tend to think they will be lucky. Wind, rain and fire happen to other, less-fortunate individuals. In a new TIME poll of 1,000 American adults taken on the eve of the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, fewer than one in five (16%) said they are personally "very well" prepared for a natural disaster or public emergency. Of the rest, about half explained their lack of preparation by claiming they don't live in an area at risk for disasters. Even among Gulf Coast residents, a mind-boggling 43% said they don?t face much risk...
