...holiday season. More than a showcase for dancing, The Nutcracker is a sensory experience--from scenery to costumes to the memorable Tchaikovsky score. And the Boston Ballet production (with a first act that was entirely revamped last year) succeeds admirably in realizing a beautiful overall effect guaranteed to convert even the most cynical grinch to the holiday spirit...

...band's best and perhaps most distinguishing feature--the surprising little vignettes of sound which switch you, with no attempt at subtlety, into a deliciously different musical genre for a few bars--makes itself felt in force: there's a '90s-style funk surprise in "Ode to Maybe" and even a hint of opera in "Red Summer Sun." ...proof that timing is indeed everything came Wednesday for HUD Secretary Andrew Cuomo. Normally, the release of a federal report on homelessness merits some polite yawns and space on page 17A. But bring it out amidst a Rudy Giuliani-Hillary Clinton fight on the issue that has everyone interested (even noted wonk Rosie O'Donnell has used her show as an anti-Rudy soapbox) and suddenly we're all very intrigued...
