After three years of prodigious calculations, he determined that some black holes must have been created during the birth of the universe, in the cataclysmic explosion called the Big Bang. These black holes, as opposed to those formed later by the collapse of stars, are minuscule; their event horizons are no larger than the circumference of a proton or other atomic particle.
