Following a 1.77-meter clearance on her first attempt in Wednesday’s NCAA Championship high jump preliminaries, junior Becky Christensen seized one of 16 coveted spots to compete in the finals for the event on Friday. At Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa, the Celina, Tex. native and four-time NCAA high jump finalist finished in a three-way tie for 12th. Christensen made easy work of the opening height of 1.74, clearing it on her first attempt. It took her two attempts at the 1.77 mark, but then faced the 1.80-meter bar. ...know if I still have a house. We're considering ourselves to be fairly lucky - we weren't part of the group that was told, 'Grab your toothbrush and get out.'... But it's still a pretty anxiety-producing event, not knowing where you are as far as your house is concerned. We may have lost everything...
Still, the amateurs seem to have helped boost the event. Although this race used to draw big names like former Olympian Danny Clark and Tour de France workhorse George Hincapie, as well as amateurs, organizers say attendance at this four-corner criterium (a short race course) has suffered in more recent years. "It's nice to get recognized by a big event and have them say, 'Hey, look. We want you to be a part of it, too." After all, says Bolger, "If you think of biking in New York City, you will think of bike messengers." With reporting by Tomas Dinges

The U.S. military, which could be drawn in to defend Taiwan in the event of a conflict, considers the Taiwan Strait to be one of the most dangerous flashpoints in Asia. Easing tensions will require more than a deal on tourism, Yang says, but he notes that Friday's agreement could help reduce provocative military maneuvers. "Both China and Taiwan conduct training exercises in the Taiwan Strait. To avoid miscalculation...
