Guess which one kids are going to pick. So why give the option to be evil? The designers use the free-will argument and note that choosing the fallen angel leads to murder and self-destruction. In the post-Columbine era, that may bear too close a resemblance to real-life nihilism. Still, Christian parents shouldn't fret. The War in Heaven moves slowly, and action...

...becomes a soap opera of epic proportions. What struck me most was the attention given to character development and relationships. Not only were past deeds and motives given careful attention to but the characters grew, made mistakes, and matured throughout. Heroes weren't infallible and enemies weren't always evil...

...poor soul to bear. But what drew me the most to the film was its surprisingly reflective nature. This wasn't a foray of pointless, indescretionary violence like we see in so many films today, but rather violence calculated to prove a point about ambition and the power of evil. And as Gara stood over a dead Dark Schneider, tears welled in my eyes as he criticized his own inability to work with his former enemy. The emotionally ravaged Gara seemed more like a modern-day Hamlet than a silly cartoon character...

...gods. He also meets Princess Mononoke, a human girl raised by Moro, a Wolf Goddess, who is engaged in a war with the humans of the ironworks. Miyazaki refuses to let the situation become too simple; by somewhat contrived means it becomes clear that the ironworkers are not evil, and the animal gods not entirely good. Though there are quite a few important characters none is flat, and Neil Gaiman's dialogue is simply brilliant. The plot, screenwriting and premise of Princess Mononoke is higher caliber than most films churned out of Hollywood...
