...hard to see why they would do so. Ever since Bush's speech in 2002 labeling North Korea a member of the "axis of evil," Kim has believed "he has a big, fat target painted on his back," says a former U.S. diplomat. "Kim believes that having a few nukes in his pocket is the ultimate guarantee that no one will try to topple his regime militarily. He's probably right about that, and no matter how much fuel oil or diplomatic goodies we send his way, he's not going to negotiate that away...

...major trouble with FemSex is that its very message is conflicting. On the one hand, it rejects the old tokens of patriarchal society in that comedic “Fuck guys! I just want to dance!” sort of way. Men are evil predators, the course preaches; a great number of them run around assaulting women, and they can never make us climax, because, as discussed in section 10, entitled “Masturbation and Orgasms,” we live in a “society that defines pleasure by male standards.” Class members...

...This turns out to be a tactical error. The ghost, a dapper old man with scribbled-over eyes, is very real and very evil, with a surprise personal stake in ruining Coyne's life, and it sets about its business in a fine, frightening style. Hill has a nice touch with those sinking moments when you suddenly realize that things, which you knew to be bad, are so very much worse than you ever could have imagined. "The dead pull the living down," is one of the ghost's tag lines, and it does its level best to deliver...

...It’s a mildly amusing and halfway-clever diversion in a book full of them. Did you know that a young Adolf Hitler had his “pip-squeak of an anus kept as immaculate as an opal, small and glistening?” Or that evil people have an unavoidable problem with body odor? Or that bees can explain many of the most difficult aspects of human existence?Somewhere between the endless chapters on the life of bees and the endless obsession with the scatological and the priapic is one of the most sinister and compelling...

...album’s disparate songs reveal a scattered but captivating personality. Band members Brent Knopf, Justin Harris, and Danny Seim are each multitalented musicians, and their experimental arrangements range from saxophones and glockenspiels to Knopf’s own digital looping machine. The chorus of “Evil Bee” emulates “The Argument”-era Fugazi before pulling out all the stops with a horn fanfare and triumphant piano riff. Menomena is fearlessly confident in its musicianship, and even the album’s few faltering steps are refreshingly original...
