...tiny bead of plastic, onto which they hooked a 124-link chain of amino acids. There are 20 different amino acids, and, because all proteins, including enzymes, are made of amino-acid chains, the acids have been recognized for many years as the "building blocks of life." The exact sequence and identity of successive acids in the ribonuclease chain were recently established, and the Rockefeller team's job was to link them, one at a time. The painstaking process involved 369 chemical reactions and no fewer than 11,931 different laboratory steps, taking three weeks in all to complete...

...exact mechanism by which methadone works is not known, but it involves tolerance and cross-tolerance, or blockade. The patients who take carefully stepped-up doses of methadone be come tolerant in the sense that they observe no outward effect from it. Presumably because methadone works on the same brain centers as heroin, it induces a cross-tolerance to heroin and blocks its effects. A methadone patient can be challenged with a massive mainline fix and show no response-except enormous relief at the knowledge that now he can take it or leave it alone. He can watch...

Only an eccentric poet like Roy Campbell, the clerical reactionary, has attempted satire in formal rhymed Popian couplets, and perhaps only W. H. Auden has succeeded in didactic eloquence within a variety of formal, traditional stanzas. Doubtless, the exact antipode of Pope's Augustan order would be the artless, extemporaneous effusions that issue from the flower children of the modern coffee house-quite a different breed from an 18th century coffee house. "A thousand years may elapse," Dr. Johnson said, "before there shall appear another man with a power of versification equal to that of Pope." With a quarter...

RIGHT NOW there are somewhere between six and twelve blind students enrolled in Harvard University. The exact number is unknown because no University official has any record of this statistic. Optimistically this could be seen as a sign that the University is attempting not to single out the handicapped. It could also show a lack of interest, except that the University clearly is interested in these students, and attempts to help them whenever possible, from supplying reading rooms for undergraduates to helping recruit readers at the Law School...

...Rosovsky report, and the CEP vote, do not reject any of the demands of the black students as expressed in their leaflet, Wilson said. But this does not mean that the Rosovsky report is an exact replica of the black demands. Some points are still being worked out, Wilson said, but he declined to say what they were...
