...politicians in distinguishing between a freedom fighter and a terrorist [SPECIAL REPORT, Nov. 12]. From my perspective, a freedom fighter, because of his political convictions, battles his superior foe by whatever means he has. A terrorist intentionally kills or seriously harms innocent third parties in the attempt to exact political, religious or military gain. Under my definition, there are former terrorists who are now seemingly respectable world leaders. Whether these people should be brought to justice or warmly embraced, the label of terrorist should be applied to them. No religion in the world should advocate the killing of innocent people...

What we do know is this: the Justice Department has broken up the 1,147 into four categories. The first is made up of those held by the INS for immigration violations; as of Nov. 1 they totaled 185. ...What I?ve been told is that if we get solid intelligence on where bin Laden or some top al Qaeda people are - an exact location - and it?s not a situation where a bombing raid would work, then the Marines will be there in an hour or two, probably a surgical-type operation of 100 or so troops. But failing that, the operative word seems to be patience - Kandahar will fall when Kandahar falls, and there seems to be little to gain with a U.S. troop presence if it?s a strictly territorial battle.
