...left and Suharto-led right might reconcile, has given way to cynicism. The expression of the artist in Sudjojono's painting is serene; in Suwage's, it is aloof. Gone are the cerulean sky, the chaotic melee of betjak drivers and army lorries, and any other form of life except for the artist, who is stripped of the mobility of Sudjojono's figure and stands pickled in stiff solitude. "We are living in a different age from Sudjojono," says Suwage of his bleaker version. "We are fed up with politics." Nostalgic for the social engagement of artists like Sudjojono...

Meanwhile, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has declined to discuss what it may have in store for the genetic-testing industry except to say it's definitely on the regulators' radar. Currently the FDA has chosen not to oversee laboratory-developed tests like these, although it has discretion...

...charter for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was signed on July 21 with much flourish and a promise to "strengthen democracy, enhance good governance and the rule of law, and to promote and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms." An admirable undertaking, except that the person formally ratifying the charter was Nyan Win, the Foreign Minister of Burma, a country with one of the world's most appalling human-rights records. Indeed, Burma's signing of the document during this year's ASEAN ministerial meeting in Singapore threatens to render meaningless the lofty humanitarian goals...

...vigorous older man leads a party of hikers along a mountain trail, pauses beside a waterfall, naps under a tree after a sandwich-and-soft-d rink lunch. A typical day in the country--except when the hale sexagenarian happens to be Pope John Paul II, taking a rare and precious break from papal responsibilities. His doctor is known to have repeatedly urged him to get more exercise, and he has long had an enthusiasm for outdoor activity. The outing, with his secretary, Stanislaw Dziwisz, some friends and ever present bodyguards, apparently took place last year during his summer vacation...

...with Jaws and The Deep has returned. But this time out, Peter Benchley has jettisoned the oversexed surf-and-turfers in favor of Timothy Burnham, a fortyish journalist turned speechwriter whose only obsession is quoting the wisdom of Samuel Johnson, as in ''No man but a blockhead ever wrote, except for money.'' Burnham writes not only for money but for President Benjamin T. Winslow, bullying, foul-tongued and Johnsonesque (Lyndon, not Samuel), and the assignments are rarely more demanding than ''Representative Whipple has told me a great deal about the fine work you ladies are doing in the Leesburg Macrame...
