John Harvard was admitted a member of the church on November 6, 1637, and a short time afterward he was made its pastor. There are few records of his ministry, except that he preached and prayed with evidences of strong feeling and affection, and that "his own heart was delighted with his ministrations." He was given the Charlestown parish in 1637, but remained pastor of the church a little less than a year, for he died on the 14th of September, 1638. The church in which he preached stood on the west side of what is now City square...
Candidates for the University basketball team will be called out on Monday, December 16. The candidates for the class teams were called out last Monday, and the Gymnasium is now open every night except Saturday until 10 o'clock for basketball practice. The games of the interclass series will be held on December 11, 12, and 14. In addition to the numerals, cups will be awarded to the members of the winning team. The University team and substitutes will be picked immediately after the Christmas recess. In the second half-year, a scrub series will be held...
Candidates for the gymnastic team were called out Monday. Regular practice will continue in the Gymnasium on Tuesday evenings, and daily at 5 o'clock, except on Wednesdays; and, as soon as possible, the men will be divided into squads, according to the particular kind of work which they are doing. The practice will be under the direction of men of previous experience, and C. L. Shrader, the gymnastic instructor. The only meets for which definite arrangements have been made are the intercollegiate championships to be held at the University of Pennsylvania about March 22, and the dual exhibition meet...
Doubtless the authorities feel justified this year in demanding strict attendance to the end, for according to the Catalogue, the vacation does not properly begin until Monday, and by that time all except the far-westerners will be at home. As a matter of fact no one can logically deny that the work of this semester ends on Saturday, December 21, and it is grossly unfair to allow the Massachusetts men to begin their enjoyment at that time, while the rest are still in the throes of sleeping car inconvenience. Harvard is an eastern University. The western representation is proportionately...
...candidates, except those who played on last year's team, will report for practice today with their class squads at the following hours: 4 to 5, Sophomores; 6 to 6.45, Juniors; 6.45 to 7.30, Seniors; 7.30 to 9, Freshmen. The interclass games will be held on Wednesday, December 11, Thursday, December 12, and Saturday, December 14. Cups and class basketball numerals will be awarded to the winning team, and the University squad will be picked from the best material in the three upperclass teams. After the Christmas recess regular work will begin for both the University and Freshman squads...
