...British, though not treaty-bound to help, agreed to. But they hoped not to land troops except as a last resort. Instead, after first dropping warning leaflets over Nizwa and its neighboring forts, they sent over the first jet planes that the Omani musketeers had ever seen. After three days and twelve rocket-and-bomb missions, the Sultan's red banner was seen flying in place of the Imam's white flag over the fort at Izki, and old hands at the R.A.F. base at Sharja were saying cheerfully that that was how it always worked in Aden...

He was born in Sept. 18, 1895 in the Ontario village of Newstadt, son of a German-descended schoolteacher who liked to boast that he had taught William Lyon Mackenzie King, Canada's famed and durable (1921-48, except for five years) Liberal Prime Minster. Elder statesman of the city's Democratic machine, Bowler shared power all through the boodle days with "Hinky Dink" Kenna and his close friend "Bathhouse John" Coughlin, whose insurance business Bowler took over when Coughlin died (1938), once maintained his own rifle-equipped "army" to hold out against gangster attempts to invade and take over his ward...
