...read the excerpt from Jane Fonda's book My Life So Far [April 11], my mind flashed back to 1968-69, Quang Tri, Vietnam, when I was a Navy physician assigned to the 3rd Marine Division. Fonda will always be remembered and despised--not because she opposed the Vietnam War but because she was a traitor who went to Hanoi and gave aid and comfort to the enemy. She appeared in photo ops with the very military equipment that the North Vietnamese used to kill U.S. pilots and crew. Her actions were an insult to American troops. Many...

...Hope for the Poor The excerpt from Jeffrey D. Sachs' new book, The End of Poverty, and awareness of the need to help Africa [March 14] caused a mix of several emotions in my mind, chief of which I identified as hope. I am encouraged that enlightened and progressive leaders in the developed world agree that the main obstacles to Africa's development are not solely or even fundamentally corruption and misrule. Had effective measures been taken to reduce overpopulation a generation ago, extreme poverty would not exist today. It is indeed unfortunate that we are led by the wishy-washy, who prefer to address poverty by providing developmental assistance while ignoring the options...

...Your excerpt from Jeffrey D. Sachs' book on how to end global poverty [March 14] brought me to tears of outrage and sorrow over the tragic plight of the world's poorest. But I was saddened even more by the stinginess and lack of empathy that the U.S. has continually shown. For all the talk about Christian values, the U.S. has failed dismally to respond to the desperate needs of the poorest of Christ's brethren by being the most tightfisted among the rich donor nations. What an absolute shame! Cheers Echevarria-Leary Albany, California...
