Wright's only defense has been that he did not break any House rule, and that might be true. House limits on members' outside income specifically exclude book royalties, and a rule against accepting speaking or writing fees "in excess of the usual and customary value for such services" may not apply to book writing. But at best this is a technical defense for what seems an obvious and unwarranted attempt to evade House rules regulating members' outside income. In any case, simply avoiding the commission of an indictable offense is no qualification for either Speaker of the House...
...agricultural payments by 20% over the next year. If a country does not comply (and the staff of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development will be the arbiter), each of the other nations will subject selected products from the offending country to tariffs equivalent in value to its excess agricultural subsidies...
...Winter Olympics in Albertville, France, came as a surprise. CBS will pay $243 million for its first Olympics since 1960. The bid seemed inordinately high to industry experts, in part because of the other networks' diffidence: NBC offered $175 million plus half of any advertising profits in excess of $325 million, while ABC, which paid $309 million for the Calgary Games and lost $65 million on the coverage, bowed out entirely. Adding to the doubts is the time difference between the U.S. and France, which could enable Americans to learn some results before taped events are broadcast in prime time...
...familiar case history of rebelliousness -- hard scuffles, bad drugs, determined excess and scrapping to sing -- but Childs played it faster and tougher than most. At 20, trying to keep a band together, she got busted on a drug rap and did three months in a federal penitentiary. "It was," she says, with uncharacteristic understate ment, "a very big scare-the-hell-out-of-me situation." Fellow inmates included a "couple of Manson girls and murderers and all kinds of things. And Patty Hearst too. I liked her." On the outside again, Childs sought more conventional means of supporting the band...
Dignity is a luxury during the Cannes fortnight. It rubs shoulders with outrage and excess, as film folk hawk their wares in the world's largest annual secular convocation. At the Palais, moviegoers must dress formally for the evening screenings; at the Whiskey-a-Go-Go, a porno star who is also a member of the Italian Parliament performs a sex act with a stuffed animal. The cafes percolate with erudite analyses of Marcel Ophuls's 4 1/2-hr. documentary / on Klaus Barbie, while back at the Eden Roc, Producer Edward Pressman discusses his new movie about Claus von Bulow...
