Gandhi bathed in water but used ashes instead of soap and had himself shaved with a dull straight razor because new blades were too expensive. He was always sweeping up excrement that others left around. Cleanliness, he believed, was godliness. But his passion for sanitation was not just finicky hygiene. He wanted to teach Indian villagers that human and animal filth caused most of the disease in the land...

The man on the toilet peruses the illuminating literature of Playboy magazine and suddenly the car explodes from to its original size, bursting the toilet open and catapulting the man across his lawn...

CHRIS OFILI, born in England to Nigerian parents, said a trip to Africa inspired him to use the excrement, sometimes decorated with glitter and beads, in his otherwise brightly colored paintings. Originally, he imported the pachyderm parcels from Zimbabwe, but now he uses the more readily available domestic variety he finds at the London Zoo. Proving how multifaceted feces can be, Ofili rests his works on resin-coated balls...
