...exhibit was a powerful memorial to the profound pain victims of sexual assault experience. A printed sign at the display said the goal of the project was to provide a forum for “survivors of a crime that is all too often kept silent to LET THEIR VOICES BE HEARD,” and certainly the exhibit met this objective when a victim admitted on a shirt, “I was raped by a group of boys...
Bergstein’s oil paintings dominate the exhibit, divided into two major thematic thrusts, both of which explore the notion and expand the definition of a self-portrait. One is a series of monochromatic studies that draw heavily on Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s “The Tower of Babel” paintings. In Bergstein’s “Mount II,” a decaying round structure emerges out of a charred and flat landscape. Fractured rising levels are energized by thin lines that betray the motion of a building buffeted by wind...
When Bergstein moves away from his studies in the second thematic section of this exhibit, he displays a lighter—if still self-reflexive—sensibility. He attaches the garments to the surface with tacks and red-painted...
...exhibit is a compilation of separate photographic series that together form the first complete overview of Bochner’s short-lived career in photography. The photographs show how Bochner’s originality of thought hovers between artistic movements. While structurally indebted to minimalism, the photographic process denies the materiality of the object, thus gesturing towards conceptualism. But, because the photographic process is inevitably influenced by some degree of chance, Bochner is not simply translating unmediated literal concepts directly into visual form. Instead, he allows the interference and complication of the artistic process to advance the conceptual foundations...
