...instances of dangerous health conditions still exist, the workers said. In one documented case at the Union, a cook was reprimanded in writing for serving underwarmed food...
Admissions policy is not, properly, a cause of differences in academic achievement. As Choi admits, it merely introduces differences to Harvard from society at large--differences which exist there for precisely the deeper reasons which the Indy suggests. Of these reasons, incidentally, I find the "expectations" argument the most plausible. While their families have doubtless had high expectations for all Harvard students, teachers and the mass media tend to convey more discouraging messages to Black and Latino students which are tough to fight past. And of a piece with these low expectations, I must add, are the very statistics which...
...comparison to David Lynch's skewed soap opera is impossible to avoid, so best to get it out of the way quickly. Wild Palms would not exist if Twin Peaks hadn't paved the way. But Wild Palms is a total original -- just as daring as and perhaps even more demanding than Lynch's series. Twin Peaks, for all its weirdness, was at bottom a simple murder mystery: Who killed Laura Palmer? Wild Palms is denser and more disorienting, a paranoid dream play that bombards us with freaky characters and mystifying plot twists, tying them together only hours later...
...very different strategy for doing pretty much the same thing: they turn into cannibals. In their larval stage, these amphibians usually find something besides salamanders to feed on. But when raised in mixed broods, a few larvae will assume a larger, more fearsome shape. These "cannibal morphs" seem to exist for one purpose only: to consume cousins (and nonrelatives) and thus make it easier for their brothers and sisters to thrive and multiply. The study does not explain how the cannibals distinguish kin from non-kin. It may be a matter of taste...
...With all the hoopla and reproduction, this will be the last chance to experience these paintings freshly before they join the huge canon of overreproduced masterpieces of early modern art. Then by all means reflect on Albert Barnes, and why nobody like him and nothing like his collection could exist today...
