...Southern Baptists agree that the Bible is the only basis for faith, but the two camps differ over how literally the Scriptures should be interpreted. In the Broadman series, for example, sections contributed by President Roy Honeycutt of the S.B.C. seminary in Louisville contend that substantial portions of Exodus were written centuries after Moses, that Moses probably had an "inner experience" of God instead of seeing an actual burning bush, and that the Bible stories of the plagues of Pharaoh or the Prophet Elisha's miracles may well have been reshaped or exaggerated in transmission. That...

...tougher export controls. The military won the right to review export licenses, and has blocked sales like the shipment of machinery to test concrete strength to the Soviets, on the grounds that the equipment could be used to help harden missile silos. Since 1981 the Customs Service's Operation Exodus has stopped at the docks some 4,000 illegal shipments abroad, including crates destined for the Soviet Union full of C-130 transport aircraft parts and satellite scanners. Cuba had also agreed to take back 2,746 criminals and mentally ill people who came to the U.S. during the mass exodus of 125,000 Cubans from the port of Mariel in 1980; a mere 201 such "excludables" had been returned before last week. In addition, the agreement was to allow some 3,000 of Cuba's political prisoners to emigrate to the U.S. One hour after Castro's suspension was announced, the first...

Nigeria's governing military junta, headed by Major General Mohammed Buhari, made it clear that it wanted to avoid the "unfortunate incidents" that took place during the 1983 exodus. Even so, many aliens complained last week of harassment by Nigerian authorities, who sometimes illegally confiscated money and possessions. Some refugees had been forced to leave their jobs without collecting wages they were owed. But the Nigerian government appeared to shrug off the chaos that the expulsion brought to so many lives. Said one immigration official: "Countries like Great Britain or France expel illegal aliens on a daily basis...
