Bogunovic's ouster is a loss for China-watchers everywhere-capitalist, Titoist, Moscow-revisionist. They had come to rely on him for perhaps the most accurate and detailed dispatches out of China. In 1960, he first reported the sure sign of a Sino-Soviet split: an exodus of Russian technicians. In 1966, he was the first to report the downfall of the once-powerful Peking mayor, Peng Chen. While other China-based correspondents hesitated, he reported flatly that Lin Piao had been picked as Mao's successor...
...exodus is hardly pleasing to either side. Jordan is simply not equipped to take care of so many hungry, homeless people. Israel, which at first was delighted by the mass departure, was growing increasingly embarrassed by it all. Last week the government ruled that no Arab could cross into Jordan with out a signed statement from the mayor of his town testifying that he was not leaving because of Israeli coercion. Pictures of Arabs fleeing from Jewish oppression, real or imagined, were hardly what Israel needed to convince the world that its objectives were not conquest but peace...
When the fighting erupted, U.S. officialdom in the Middle East carried out a mini-exodus worthy of a latter-day Moses. In the face of the most widespread and violent anti-American outbursts in history, more than 20,000 U.S. civilians fled the area by cab and cattle boat, cruise ship and jetliner. About 35,000 Americans-mostly oil-company employees, military personnel and foreign service officers-remained behind, but U.S. consulates and embassies were ready to evacuate them as well should Arab hysteria continue to rise...
...meetings with the police and with Mayor John F. Collins continued on Saturday. Community agencies set up a common headquarters at the Operation Exodus office on Blue Hill Ave. At 7 p.m. Kenneth Guscott, president of the Boston branch of the NAACP, met with the Mayor at City Hall. It was reported that Collins agreed to limit the number of police in Roxbury, to end the yelling and name-calling by police, and to restrict the use of guns. One proposed meeting between organization leaders and Collins failed to materialize, although the leaders stressed the importance of keeping communication open...
Because of the prominence of integration in revealing the problems of core-city education, many plans for reform have aimed at desegregation as a primary goal. One recent proposal seeks to combat the exodus of whites from core cities by expanding school systems to include white suburbs. Proponents of such "metropolitan" school districts contend that larger systems would open better suburban schools to Negro and Puerto Rican students and would provide the numbers of whites needed to achieve integration...
