Obama’s desire to expand school hours and days, in combination with the economic stimulus bill, provides a unique opportunity for American education to adopt such enrichment courses. If the president’s scheduling plans come to fruition, schools would no longer face an either-or decision, where providing time for arts and sports comes at the cost of academic instruction. Here in Massachusetts, early results for the expanded learning time initiative suggest that adding hours to the day or days to the year to expand time spent on both traditional academics and enrichment activities improve performance on state standardized tests. Charter schools, moreover, also appear to benefit from longer school years or days. The KIPP national network of charter schools, for example, has a school day typically running from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday class every other weekend, and a three-week summer session, and KIPP’s eighth-grade classes regularly outperform their district averages...

In April the U.S. Senate introduced the bipartisan Iran Refined Petroleum Sanctions Act, which would expand sanctions imposed by Bill Clinton in 1996 and give the White House the authority to sanction companies that export gas to Iran. Senator Joe Lieberman told reporters at the time that the law would "target Iran's Achilles' economic heel, which is its dependence on imports of petroleum ... most notably gasoline...

...when much of the stimulus spending will have run out, is that the economy will continue to grow but at a rate slower than past recoveries. A recent poll of economists by the newsletter Blue Chip Economic Indicators found that on average, economists expect the economy to expand 2.7% in the fourth quarter of 2010. That's faster than the economy is growing today, but not what you would expect in good times. "The rule is that the deeper the recession, the more robust the rebound," says Blue Chip editor Randy Moore. "But that's not what people are predicting...
