...footbridge across the Rhine to the French powerhouse at Kembs (in front of Mulhouse), due warning was given to the German side. Evacuation of 300,000 civilians from Mulhouse to Biarritz on the Bay of Biscay was begun by the French this week. This hinted that the French may expect a real German push at her Belfort Gate, south end of the Maginot-Westwall stalemate, or through the Swiss side door. > Machine gunners on the forefront of the German advance wore steel armor covering them from neck to crotch. Weighing 30 Ibs. but only 1/20 in. thick, this gear...
Today 25,000 barrels of Barco oil flow daily through the pipe line. Next year they expect to step that up to 50,000, with an eventual top of 70,000 barrels after all seven pumping stations are in. The oil yields 49% gasoline on straight run, double that under cracking processes (ordinary black oil yields no better than 24% gasoline on straight run). How much of it lies hidden in the upper Catatumbo basin nobody knows. The companies have until August 1941 to stake out their final claims. Then half of the Barco reverts to the Colombian Government...
...practice featured 45 minutes of defensive scrimmage against Skip Stahley's Wildcats. The Yardlings presented one team to face the A team and another for the B outfit. Don McNicol impersonated Wild Bill Hutchinson of the Green, and gave the Varsity a pretty fair idea of what to expect in the Stadium tomorrow. Earlier in the afternoon, Harlow conducted the squad through a long drill on pass defense and offense. Today's workout will probably be only a tapering off process, and Harlow may give a few more definite indications on some of the doubtful starting posts in the lineup...
...Laughton and the high-strung tension of Hitchcock direction complement each other perfectly. The result is high adventure worthy of Dumas combined with the trip-hammer pace of a first-rate detective story. Maureen O'Hara, Laughton's much-heralded colleen, is not, however, the sensation that one might expect. While she is admirable as a wide-eyed adventuress, it is hard to imagine her as a big-time all-around actress,--but then, you never can tell...
...starting Dartmouth backs are light, and they got even smaller when Coach Blaik digs down into his reserve material. The Harvard forward wall will probably have a slight weight advantage on its Hanover rivals, so Crimson followers have no reason to expect their team to be pushed all over the field. One of the most potent of the Green scoring weapons is said to be their aerial attack, but it has yet to click in a game...
