In Japan, cosmetics firm Shiseido introduced an enlightened scheme in April 2005 whereby employees with children under 3 are offered a one-time benefit of an additional two weeks of paid leave. Since the scheme's adoption, says spokesman Tatsuyoshi Endo, only 28 men have taken advantage of the offer. (At Shiseido's Tokyo head office 1,780 of the 3,300 employees are men, but the firm doesn't keep a tally of how many are fathers). Other companies are offering similarly...

...general, parkour enthusiasts tend to respect authority and if told to stop climbing on a wall will nod and move along. Some try to explain to campus cops exactly what it is they're up to. Students at Maryland's McDaniel College told its campus safety director, Michael Webster, how much planning goes into what he remembers their calling "architectural acrobatics," and they stressed that they wouldn't "create an unnecessarily large amount of first-aid calls." ...Cubism (Jacques Villon and Marcel Duchamp served as camoufleurs) were a huge influence, as were the visual disruptions of Vorticism in the Dazzle patterns applied to Allied ships during World War I. Dazzle made it hard for the enemy to get a fix - a trait that could also help explain the rebellious appeal of camouflage patterns since the 1980s for fashion designers like Versace and Jean-Paul Gaultier, and pop idols from the Clash to Madonna.
