Monsoon rains have turned the roads to quagmires in the Northeast, but the Commandos press on, moving from village to village in Japanese-made Jeeps, or rented oxcarts if the going gets too heavy. A Thai official goes along to explain that "our government has asked these foreigners to help us." The medics give shots, dress wounds and treat minor diseases, including dysentery. Their long-term aim is to teach the Thais these skills and so to work them selves out of jobs...
...constitutional provision or federal law says how American political parties should select their presidential candidates. The system has evolved almost by happenstance. Its processes, often contradictory and in some instances so convoluted that both lawyers and politicians are hard put to explain them, are a bewilderment of accretions. It is through a combination of primaries, party caucuses and state conventions that delegates to the national conventions are chosen...
Brezhnev and the other party bosses had summoned Czechoslovak Party Leader Alexander Dubček to Warsaw to explain his policies, but Dubcek politely declined. Instead, he offered to meet separately in Prague with each one of the Communist leaders. Dubcek feared going to any meeting where the other leaders might join in browbeating him, was especially wary of being lured out of the country at a time when his reformist regime seemed in peril. To his followers, he is "Uncle Ho" when he writes burbling public letters to children: "You are rejoicing, and your Uncle Ho rejoices with you. Guess why? First, because I love you . . . '" To his political enemies, many of them dead, thanks to his ruthless purges, he has been a southern...
...mechanical level Anouilh feels no need to explain how the letters to Bonfant find their way into Madame Mlle, de Ste. Euverte's hands, on a textual level he feels no qualms about using the term 'soul' to explain contradictory situations. When Anouilh wants to indulge in a dissertation about 'honor' he so indulges, forming such a situation even though nothing of the resulting discussion between the General and his Secretary is coherently related to the characters or the action of the rest of the play. This is not a fault--it is just another style of writing plays...
