...unless Russia modified its stand. Gromyko then made a largely meaningless procedural concession, and agreed to discuss Berlin "simultaneously" with Russian plans for an All-German Commission. So eager is British Foreign Secretary Selwyn Lloyd to keep the talking going in Geneva so that he would not have to explain a breakoff to the House of Commons (before it adjourns July 30) that Lloyd persuaded his colleagues to forget their threats and return to the bargaining table...
...reason is that as early as 1952 Russian Physicist P. M. Kubanski started publishing scientific papers about the effect of sound waves on heat transfer. There is at least a chance that the Russians are already using sonic controls in some of their rockets-and that in turn might explain how they got those giant Sputniks in orbit...
Acoustica engineers explain that when a solid fuel burns in a high-pressure combustion chamber, the components, e.g., ammonium perchlorate and polystyrene, turn to gases that mix in a thin layer on its surface. Part of the heat generated strikes back to the fuel, gasifies more of it, and so keeps the flame burning. When this characteristic was discovered by Dr. Martin Summerfield of Princeton, the next step was to look for something that would control the gas mixture. A faster mixing would increase the burning rate, while slower mixing would decrease it. If the control were precise enough, scientists...
Nominally a Baptist (her father left the Catholic Church as a young man), Sue Ingersoll became a convert to Catholicism 2½ years ago. Now Sue painstakingly undertook to explain to her former fellow Protestants that a Catholic "cannot be pushed around," is free to rely on his own conscience in matters outside "direct canonical concern." Said she: "Bishops, cardinals and even Popes may be subjected to criticism." Even excommunication is only "a denial of certain privileges, in much the same way that a teen-ager might be denied the use of the family car. He is, of course, still...
...outshone by the performance of other reporting companies. Allegheny Ludlum raised its half-year profit 802% to a record $3.20 a share, Jones & Laughlin hiked profits 642% to a record $5.31 a share, and Crucible Steel ran up a new record with earnings of $2.22. Seeking to explain the high steel profits, Jones & Laughlin's President Avery C. Adams pointed out that steel mills in the second quarter operated at 94% of capacity v. 55% for last year's second quarter. But he also noted that the $676 million spent by the company on cost-cutting, modernization...
