This spared Koernke from having to explain his 1984 arrest for carrying a concealed weapon (he reportedly received a suspended sentence) or his 1986 arrest for felonious assault. According to a police report, three complainants, who admitted to having tried repeatedly to pass Koernke's van, alleged that he "bolted from the van ... pointing a handgun at them with both hands [and said] 'If you want problems, I'll give it to you. Stay off the road.'" The resulting search of Koernke's van turned up a gas mask, a (legal) 12-gauge shotgun with 10 shells, K rations...

...example for the public in whose sight they work. Their responsibility is to think ahead boldly, not to fear the disfavor of the crowd, to imbue their actions with a spiritual dimension (which of course is not the same thing as ostentatious attendance at religious services) to explain again and again--both to the public and to their colleagues--that politics must do far more than reflect the interests of particular groups or lobbies. ...friends in high and public places. U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration officials have long felt, however, that Gilberto's intelligence has been overrated. Believed to be the leader of the powerful Cali cocaine cartel, Gilberto, who says he is merely an honest drugstore magnate, has never been able to explain why the Medell?n drug lord Pablo Escobar-now deceased-was always trying to kill him. In any case, "the Chess Player," as Gilberto is known, miscalculated on his final move, failing to negotiate the terms of his surrender with the Colombian government. Last Friday he was arrested in a surprise...

...explain this baffling fact, astronomers in the past decade or so have suggested that jets of matter must be shooting out of these still forming stars. Only by slinging some of the incoming matter away as a counterbalance could the protostars avoid going into a superfast spin. When a new star finally becomes massive enough to ignite the nuclear-fusion reaction that makes it shine, the resulting outward blast of energy would stop any more matter from falling in, the jets would turn off, and the remaining dusty disk would start clumping together to form planets...

When Mark Neumann was a math teacher, he'd lecture on the arithmetic of the federal deficit to his high school class in Janesville, Wisconsin. Hauling out charts and graphs, he'd explain the atrociousness of the situation, how the budget crisis had to be solved, and why America had to live within its means. Last week Neumann was again hauling out the math and the charts and the graphics, but this time as a freshman Congressman and real-life budget cutter returning home from a historic budget-busting session of the House of Representatives. How would this play...
