...little more than a week after publication, and has debuted at No. 1 on the Publishers Weekly nonfiction best-seller list. Crowds lined up around the block in midtown Manhattan last week just to get Stern to autograph copies. Quite a response to a 435-page autobiography filled with explicit sex talk, nasty put-downs of such celebrities as Johnny Carson and Arsenio Hall, and rampant ethnic slurs (''How do you like those Hispanic chicks who dye their hair blond? That's an attractive look. No wonder some Spanish guys are ready to rape any white woman who comes along...

Alternative musicians are a far cry from the strutting, white-male rockers of decades gone by. They tend to be antisexist, pro-tolerance and pro- underdog, whether it's animals or humans. The same goes for female rockers. When Chicago hyperintellectual singer Liz Phair, 26, played her explicit debut album Exile from Guyville for her parents, she was surprised at the reaction. ...latest Soviet offer in Geneva may force Reagan to resolve these disputes over the nature of SDI and its role in arms control. At a special session of the two delegations, Chief Soviet Negotiator Viktor Karpov presented proposals that made an explicit connection between reducing offensive weapons and limiting strategic defense programs. The plan amplifies an informal one the Soviets made last month that sought to set limits on America's SDI program through maintaining continued adherence to the ABM treaty. In making their offer, the Soviets have done precisely what U.S. officials have been wanting them...

...protagonists in Chloe Hooper's compelling second book clearly lack it. The author, by contrast, has it in spades. Hooper's account of the real-life events surrounding the death in custody of an Aboriginal man nearly four years ago is the more powerful for her not making explicit all of her conclusions about the case. Without these in the way, the reader's own feelings have room to grow. Anger and sadness coalesce into something like despair: in 21st century Australia, how could this story have played...
