...just wanted to express my frustration with the recent Undergraduate Council resolution to allocate funds to student groups practicing "Random Acts of Kindness" (News, Feb. 17). Perhaps I have misinterpreted the council's mission at Harvard, but my own goat was quite gotten by the idea that the council is here to act as the great moral reward-giver of our community. Should the council wish to contribute funds to more disorganized "acts of kindness" than those practiced spectacularly by PBHA and other organizations, I should think they might still have a well-defined criteria for what those acts entail...

Conversational critics of public education are willing to express dissatisfaction with schools, but few can be prodded into proposing and expounding upon reform ideas. Suggest taking on a classroom for a year to them and you'll probably elicit a predictable response: hearty laughter as if the proposal was a joke. Even though education should be an all-encompassing investment, one in which every citizen nurtures, encourages and excites children by the process of learning, parents and the public at large rarely have a meaningful reciprocal relationship with the public school environment...
