...extend my deepest sympathy to Joe Colombo [July 12] not only for suffering at the hands of senseless violence, but also for failing to rally enough support to get the editors of newsmagazines to observe the "law of omertà" namely silencing their writers' biased attacks on the Italian-American community. Joe Colombo will long be remembered as a champion of freedom for millions of Italian Americans. He will not be remembered as a "progenitor of the Mafia...
...Through the years of uncertainty about the fate of the men. the families have developed a diplomat's sensitivity to the nuances of negotiating ploys. While the majority views Hanoi's latest offer with sad skepticism, the wariness has begun to extend to the public statements of American officials. After passengers with reservations were loaded onto a flight, the airline would fill up empty seats with stand-by customers on a first-come, first-served basis-and at a substantial reduction...
...late; factory men usually come early and leave early. The experiment has attracted the attention of the German government, which allows most of the 1,000 employees of the Transport Ministry to arrive and leave within two-hour margins. The Bonn Cabinet will review results and decide whether to extend staggered working hours throughout the government. Unions are paying attention too. They are asking for a 2% raise for workers on staggered hours, arguing that it is justifiable repayment for lower absenteeism and higher productivity...
