...synagogue stands in the center of Carpentras. its austere stone exterior relieved only by a plaque bearing a laconic message: THIS HOUSE OF PRAYER, BUILT IN 1367, WAS RECONSTRUCTED FROM 1741 TO 1743. Inside, all is ornate -fine old chandeliers, green woodwork, delicately forged iron. The Louis XV décor in a synagogue seems as out of place as the large cross formed by the windows. The window arrangement, however, is entirely appropriate: for the synagogue of Carpentras, near Avignon, is a relic of a strange medieval relationship between the papacy and a Jewish community...

...after his death in 1953, the old dictator's successors ruthlessly turned against him. In a secret speech to the 20th Party Congress, Nikita Khrushchev in 1956 denounced Stalin as an egomaniac who employed mass terror and torture. Stalin was then efficiently erased from public view, and the exterior vestiges of his rule-statues, pictures, street signs -came tumbling down. In 1961, as a final act of destalinization, his body was removed from Lenin's mausoleum and put in a simple grave near the Kremlin...

Brewer has the support of organized labor, a former Wallace bastion. He has gone out of his way to avoid antagonizing the state's crucial 300,000 black voters, and as of now he is slightly favored. Wallace dismisses his opponent as "Sissy Britches," but beneath his cocky exterior he has shown some signs of desperation. Wallaceites recently passed out phony photos showing Brewer greeting Black Muslims Muhammad AH and Elijah Muhammad. Last week Wallace erupted with the puzzling charge that his opponent had piled "evil abuse" on Wallace's dead wife, although Brewer has never mentioned...

...idea for the show grew out of Producer Reynolds' friendship with Dr. Norman Schacter, principal of Los Angeles High School. Many of the show's exterior scenes are shot at L.A. High, while the series' interior sets are based on the classrooms, corridors and offices of the school. Several script ideas have taken shape in the minds of the show's writers after spending time on the campus talking to teachers and students and sitting in on classes. "Arizona State Loves You," the story of a college coach recruiting a black high school athlete, is based...
