Martel identifies Henry’s temporary loss of an authorial voice with that of the extinct animal and those of Holocaust victims. Martel also appears to take umbrage at the idea that the Holocaust must always remain a static concept. According to Henry, first-hand accounts of past suffering cannot accomplish the same emotional and intellectual challenge that a piece of fiction can. Already depleted from overfishing, stocks are down 60% just over the past decade, and the species might be gone within a few short years. The reason? ...Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Nepal, Russia, Thailand and Vietnam - but only just. A century ago, there were an estimated 100,000 tigers in the wild in Asia. Now their numbers are at an "all time low" of 3,200, estimates the WWF, which in January warned the animals could be extinct in the wild by 2022 - the next Year of the Tiger - unless new efforts are made to save them...
