...Scientist Karl Ehrhardt of Germany published photographs of a female monkey holding a young guinea pig in a maternal manner. This foster mother had been injected with a crude extract from pituitary glands. In 1932 Dr. Oscar Riddle and his associates at the Carnegie Institution's station for experimental evolution on Long Island obtained in almost pure form the same pituitary substance which had made Ehrhardt's monkey act like a mother. Because it was a stimulant of milk secretion this substance was called prolactin...

...banned extract contained, Dr. Megaro revealed, a large quantity of previously suppressed information concerning the Italian dictator's early life and writings, which the Harvard tutor obtained and smuggled out of Italy in 1925-26 and 1932-33. The biography, he said, is an attempt to prevent the building of a new "Napoleonic Legend" by reconstructing a picture of Mussolini's early career while the facts are still obtainable and the picture not permanently distorted...

Casting about for something new with which to attack mouse sarcoma 180. Dr. Richard Lewisohn of New York City's Mount Sinai Hospital decided to try spleen extract. The functions of the spleen, an organ in the upper left abdomen, are not wholly understood but one of them is to disintegrate red blood corpuscles and set free their hemoglobin. It has been observed that when bits of cancer are transported by the bloodstream to colonize elsewhere in the body, the spleen is seldom affected. Spleen extract had been tried against cancer before, without success. Dr. Lewisohn decided that...

...took 281 healthy white mice, implanted cancers under their right armpits by injections of tumor particles of mouse sarcoma 180. The spleen extract which he prepared to use was in high concentration. In most of the mice, hemorrhage then occurred at the cancer site. This was soon covered by a scab which in time was thrown off and the wound eventually healed. The cancer had disappeared, leaving no trace except a slight sparseness of hair over the region it once occupied. Five months after treatment there were no recurrences. In Surgery, Gynecology & Obstetrics last week Dr. Lewisohn gave the percentage...

...beneficial agent which did not get in. A Dutchman, Christian Eijkman, found that chickens which ate nothing but polished rice developed beriberi, but that if the chickens ate the rice coatings they got better. For a quarter century Dr. Robert Runnels Williams of Bell Telephone Laboratories labored to extract the mysterious "vitamin" from rice coatings, finally squeezed 1/6 oz. from a ton of raw material. Later Vitamin B 1 , as it is now called, was synthesized. The synthetic vitamin is also known as thiamin chloride...
