Keep up those grants. The more students see the council as a resource for their interests, the more powerful it will become. Council grants for student projects keep this campus interesting. We should strengthen and empower students through existing interests. The council will fail if it becomes another competing extracurricular activity...

Leveling the playing field in this way was not the primary motivation for randomization; "diversity" was. I'm not sure if the new system will promote more interaction between races or members of different extracurricular activities; I certainly hope it does, but statistics show that many blocking groups this year were composed entirely of members of one race. The new system may break up enclaves of gay and lesbian or black students, which is a shame; but there is little point in the admissions office assembling such a diverse group of students if they never have contact with each other...
