Many on the right also joined leftists in criticizing Sarkozy's national debate on French identity. Detractors said it cast immigrants, ethnic minorities and Muslims as threats. The UMP had hoped to pick up extreme-right voters by co-opting some of the traditional themes of the extremist National Front (FN) party. But the debate only seemed to help the moribund FN bounce back; it took 17% of the second round vote in the 12 regions in which it qualified. ...disturbed by the racist and inhumane comments of Martin Kramer, Visiting Scholar at the National Security Studies Program at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs. We have become even more alarmed that rather than taking a dissociating or even strictly neutral stance against such extremist and hateful statements, the Weatherhead Center issued a defensive response...
...years of warlord feuding (18 U.S. soldiers died protecting a U.N. mission in Mogadishu in 1993, an episode that later became the subject of the book and film Black Hawk Down) and then the rise of a movement - the Taliban in Afghanistan, al-Shabab in Somalia - that proposed an extremist vision of Islam as a solution to the lawlessness. On Feb. 22, Iranian agents allegedly intercepted Abdolmalek Rigi, leader of Jundallah, a Sunni extremist group that has waged a low-level war against Tehran for the better part of a decade, killing hundreds. According to state media, Rigi, 27, was on a flight bound for Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, from Dubai when the Iranians forced the plane to land at the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas. A day later, Iran's Intelligence Minister Heydar Moslehi hailed Rigi's arrest as proof of "the power of the Islamic Republic...
